Payment Options For Tube?

You can buy and pay for your London Tube in 4 ways, as mentioned below:

  • Paper ticket
  • Oyster cards
  • Travel card
  • Contactless credit card

Paper Tickets

This is the most common way of purchasing tickets for London Underground. These are simple physical paper tickets that you can buy from Tube stations. Different types of paper tickets are available as per your travel, such as return tickets, single journeys, and day passes. Physical paper tickets can be on the costly side as compared to other methods such as oyster cards or credit card payments.

Oyster Cards

It is the most preferred way of paying for London underground, buses, and riverboat services for people in the UK. Travel with oyster cards is comparatively cheaper and has discounts on it. You can recharge your Oyster card with an online credit card transaction.

A Visitor Oyster card is a quick and easy way to pay for travel on public transport in London. Buy your card before you leave home and save money with special offers. A Visitor Oyster card is a smart card. It’s a quick and easy way to pay for journeys on bus, Tube, tram, DLR, London Overground, Elizabeth Line, River Bus and most National Rail services in London.

Travel Cards

A travel card in London is valid for a particular zone assigned. It gives you unlimited travel at any time in tube buses. You can use a Travelcard at a flat rate for a particular period, for one day, a week, one month, or annually. You can also get a day travel card for unlimited rides in a day. Travelcard may seem like a nice idea for tourists, but it is only economical if you plan to travel more than three times per day or outside Zones 1 and 2.

You can buy a 7-day, Monthly and Annual travel card, or one with start and end dates you choose (any length between 1½ and 10½ months).

  • 7-Day Travelcards give you seven days’ travel for the price of five days.
  • Monthly Travelcards are generally cheaper than buying four consecutive 7-Day Travelcards. They give a saving of 11% compared with continuing use of 7 Day Travelcards. For example, over a year, 12 Monthly Travelcards cost 11% less than 52 7 Day Travelcards.

Credit Cards

Contactless credit cards are an additional way to go about buying your Tube tickets. They are tremendously suitable as you do not have to carry a lot of cash and change as you do when you have to buy paper tickets. You can put this card in and tap in when you enter and exit the London tube stations, and it will be robotically calculated and grounded on the journey you have moved. They also provide numerous concessions as other cards do.
