Dreaming of starting a permanent life in the UK after your Degree is completed? You are not alone. Thousands of overseas students ask the same question every year: how to acquire PR in the UK after studying?
The good news is it’s totally easy to do. The UK provides a simplified route to immigration that takes you from a student visa to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), the technical word for Permanent Residency (PR) in the UK.
But the fact is: PR in the UK is not a given. “Strategic planning is required, as well as the right choices of visas, and each step has its own eligibility criteria.
This guide from ABN Education wants to give you the confidence to plan your journey. It breaks down everything you need to know, from options for a post-study visa to ILR requirements.
What Is PR in the UK?
PR in the UK is for Permanent Residence, which means the right to live, work, and study in UK without immigration limitations for non-UK residents. In the UK, it is popularly known as Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). Those who are eligible and meet the residency criteria and immigration laws can apply for PR and British citizenship later.
The Standard PR Pathway: Step by Step
The most common route for international students looks like this:
Step 1: Complete Your Degree at a UK University
Your PR journey begins the moment you enrol at a recognised UK university. Choosing the right institution and course matters because your future visa eligibility depends on it.
To be eligible for post-study visa routes:
- You must study at a Home Office-approved higher education provider
- You must complete your Degree (your university will confirm this to the Home Office)
- You must have held a valid Student Visa (formerly Tier 4) throughout your studies
Step 2: Apply for the Graduate Route (Post-Study Work Visa)
Once you graduate, your first step toward PR is the Graduate Route, commonly known as the Post-Study Work Visa (PSW UK).
What Is the Graduate Route?
Introduced in July 2021, the Graduate Route allows eligible international graduates to remain in the UK and work or look for work after completing their Degree.
Key Features:
- Duration: 2 years for bachelor’s and master’s graduates; 3 years for PhD/doctoral graduates
- No job offer required — you can apply without a sponsor
- Work flexibility — work full-time, part-time, freelance, or even start a business
- No skill level restriction — you can work in any role while searching for a career-track job
- Travel freedom — you can travel in and out of the UK
Important Update for 2026–2027:
From 1 January 2027, the Graduate Route validity for bachelor’s and master’s graduates will be reduced from 2 years to 18 months. PhD graduates will continue to receive 3 years. If you apply on or before 31 December 2026, you will still receive the full 2-year visa.
How to Apply:
- Wait for your university to confirm your course completion to the Home Office
- Apply online from within the UK before your student visa expires
- Pay the application fee (approximately £715 + healthcare surcharge)
- Most decisions are received within 8 weeks
Note: The Graduate Route does not count directly toward ILR. However, time spent on it can contribute to the 10-year-long residence route if needed.
Step 3: Switch to a Skilled Worker Visa
This is the most critical step toward permanent residency in the UK. The Skilled Worker Visa (formerly Tier 2) is the primary route through which graduates build the 5-year residency required for ILR.
How It Works:
- Find a job with a Home Office-approved employer (they must hold a sponsor licence)
- Your job must appear on the eligible occupations list.
- You must meet the salary threshold: As of 2025, this is a minimum of approximately £26,200 per year, though many roles require higher.
Step 4: Complete 5 Years of Continuous Lawful Residence
Once you are on the Skilled Worker Visa, the countdown to ILR begins. You must complete 5 years of continuous, lawful residence in the UK on an eligible visa.
What Counts Toward the 5 Years?
- Time on the Skilled Worker Visa
- Time on other qualifying work visas (Global Talent, Innovator Founder, etc.)
- Time on the Graduate Route does not count toward the standard ILR 5-year requirement (but counts toward the 10-year route)
Maintaining Eligibility During This Period:
- Do not overstay your visa or have any immigration violations.
- Avoid any serious criminal convictions.
- Ensure you continue to meet salary and employment requirements.
- Do not take extended absences from the UK (generally, no more than 180 days per year outside the UK)
Step 5: Apply for ILR (Permanent Residency)
After completing 5 years on an eligible visa, you can formally apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) the UK’s version of PR.
ILR Requirements Checklist:
- 5 years of continuous lawful residence on a qualifying visa
- Pass the Life in the UK Test (a multiple-choice exam on British history, culture, and values)
- Prove English language proficiency (usually satisfied by your UK degree)
- Clean immigration record
- Currently employed in a qualifying role (for Skilled Worker route)
- Meet the salary threshold at time of application
How to Apply:
- Apply online via the UK Government website using Form SET(O)
- Pay the ILR application fee: approximately £2,885
- Submit biometric information (fingerprints and photograph)
- Attend an interview if required
- Processing time: Most ILR applications are processed within 6 months
Alternative PR Routes for International Graduates
Graduate Route → Skilled Worker Visa is the most common route, but there are more options available depending on your profile:
Global Talent Visa
For outstanding people in academics, research, arts, or digital technology. Requires a recommendation from a reputable UK body. Can get ILR in as little as 3 years. Perfect for academics, scientists, and technology managers with a solid professional background.
Innovator Founder Visa
For graduates who desire to establish a new business in the UK. Takes a credible, flexible company plan and approval from a UK body. Can lead to ILR after 3 years.
Long Residence Route
Long Residence route: If you have been living legally in the UK for 10 continuous years (any combination of visas is acceptable), you can apply for ILR. This is where time on the Graduate Route can help.
Family Route
If you marry or enter into a civil partnership with a British citizen or ILR holder, you may be entitled to ILR under the Family Route after a qualifying time.
Realistic Timeline: How Long Does PR Take?
Here is a realistic breakdown for a master’s graduate:
Stage Duration
Master’s Degree in the UK 1–2 years
Graduate Route (Post-Study Work Visa) 2 years
Skilled Worker Visa 5 years
Total Before ILR Eligibility ~7–8 years
It is important to note: the 5-year clock starts from when you switch to a qualifying work visa, not from when you first arrived in the UK.
